A Sorta Fairytale

Today was a fairytale.

I wore a geometric colourful dress, my mum refers to it as the Kaleidoscope dress.  I’ve spent a lot of my life in black. Occasionally, I like to get a little crazy, and on top of that I decided that this colourful, thin and short dress was appropriate to wear on a cold day and to drop my car off at a yard. *facepalm* When I’d left the house, it was warm in the sun, cool in the shade. I thought it would be okay…but it was not okay. Within a few minutes of dropping off my car, the skies opened and started spitting all over me.

My original plan was to wait, because I was just getting new tires and the last time i went, it didn’t take long. They told me it was going to be about two hours. I had a few choices-  I could get a bus to my mum’s house, I could sit inside the car place and play on my phone near other random customers, I could wait outside and freeze or I could walk in the rain and get the bus to the nearest shopping mall.

Arriving at the busport, at the shopping mall, and frantically repeating my mantra, (don’tspendmoneydon’tspendmoneydon’tspendmoney) I planned to window-shop and maybe get some lunch then head back, avoid the stores where I’d try on outfits and convince myself that I need them.

I was cold, trying to get out of the spitting rain and walking fast through the bus port. There are usually random people yelling out stuff at train and bus stations; randomly striking up a conversation because they’re bored, high on drugs or wanting your loose change (which barely anyone has anymore.) None of that was happening, but my mind was focussed on getting into a store asap because I was cold and uncomfortable. I didn’t want to have to slow down and deal with randos.

HOWEVER…

Heading towards the stairs, I passed an elderly man – well, he saw me as we were approaching each other, and he said that my dress was fantastic. He said this from a few metres away and through a mask, so I think he repeated it  for me and then he kept adding to it. “That dress is just so lovely etc” I stopped and told him I usually wear black so this was a nice change, what a pity it didn’t match the weather blablabla. We exchanged pleasantries and then he told me that I had beautiful eyes.

THEN he told me that he has to sing to me.

He sang me a song about the colour of my eyes and how beautiful they were. It was a song I’d never heard before, it was kind of old-timey, (as you may imagine.) it was the type where the melody only made sense to him, and the timing and phrasing was different from what you’d expect. He probably did a verse and chorus (?) with traffic behind him and people occasionally walking by wondering wtf we were doing…then he stopped and told me that now I owed him one.

I was scanning my brain for a song that an old dude might like before I sang some of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables.

We talked some more about where each of us was from before we moved to the area and later, we hugged. I asked him for a picture and told him that I loved the random interaction and I was very happy to meet him. His name was John and he told me he frequently shops there and hopes he’d see me again. I told him that I hoped to see him again soon and that he has a lovely day and a weekend *(this was originally written on Friday)

Annnnnd then we hugged again and I scored a kiss on the cheek from this charming bastard! It was kinda fucking awesome.

My mum always told me that you’d never know if you’re meeting an angel. I like to think that is true, you don’t know someone’s story (even if they’re not a supernatural being lol) and you don’t know how that interaction will shape (yours or) their day. Kindness and connection is the most important thing you can offer another person to feed their soul.

When I stopped and talked to him, instead of only thanking him for the compliment and rushing by, I was thinking that this guy probably doesn’t talk to a lot of younger people, it’s a dreary day, we all want to get out of the weather and on our way. He went out of his way to say something nice to me, and there is nothing stopping me engaging with a stranger this friendly.

I hoped that he’d go on his journey home having heard a classic song from a musical and maybe be happy that someone stopped to play with him.

It was like two kids meeting at a park and becoming friends for just that afternoon before their parents told them to come home.

I liked being able to offer an audience for him to perform his song, and also to have him hug a girl with big boobs for probably the first time in years. I needed to have a random, pleasant interaction with an older person I would normally pay no attention to and who deserves a few minutes of someone’s time. I think home might be people, even ones we barely get enough time to interact with. It made me happy and not so pissed off at the world for a little while. Hopefully it did the same for him.

TLDR:

*Met a random old dude.

*He sung to me.

*We hugged

*I am kicking myself I didn’t offer my number to drive him home from his shopping trips in the future.  John, I hope I see you again so I can do this for you!
