Really.
All of a sudden, this week has brought significant changes to the major social media sites. Facebook and Instagram have announced a new feature that will “limit comments” under public posts. Youtube is trialling a removal of the “dislike button,” with the reason it’s helping creators’ well-being by not seeing negative stuff. Some alternative platforms, eg: Dlive have implemented a clause that they will remove or demonetise any videos that go against guidelines that are convoluted and aimed only at certain types of speech, subject to change.
No one is going to upload gore or criminal activities. For the vast and overwhelming majority of creators, well-adjusted, well-read humans with a fucking opinion, it has become a minefield to navigate every time they open their mouth. The goalposts of what’s acceptable are always moving to fit some sort of narrative the mainstream are bent on steering and one that is becoming laughingly blatant, even to the Normies.
Youtube is not a “safe space” for anyone with a real opinion/different take on media, politics or the culture we live in – unless you’re bringing them a lot of money through revenue attached to your viewers/subs/likes/shares…and even that often won’t save some content creators. Removing the dislike button, Susan Wojcicki, is…weird. Especially since the reasoning behind it was about stopping content creators from feeling like shit because of dislikes on their videos.
We already have the ability to turn off comments unless we personally approve them, ban people from the channel and make the uploaded videos private/unlisted/link-only etc…Now, when Youtube has been around since 2005, suddenly there is a great push to remove a public dislike button. Apparently, the other reason for this “trial” (when people say they are trialling something, it’s going ahead- unless it’s from game developers) was there were a scary band of internet outlaws who wasted their day visiting YouTube channels they didn’t like in order to downvote them.
It’s this point where I have to break into the most obvious and prime example for all to see,
I’m an Australian, with no horse in the race and just observing, but I’m going to choose the biggest spectacle we’ve all just lived through; the 2020 Presidential (s)Election. It was …entertaining, to say the least.
Ignoring the MSM and searching the internet, watching all candidates live political speeches and actions (etc etc) at 2am (night owls unite!) getting my news from a multitude of small papers and local commentary from where these people appeared, I couldn’t help but notice the misquoting or shaping of the events depicting something entirely different the next morning when I woke up. MSM has a lot of psy-op bullshit to answer for, but I digress. The television and papers can skew reality but now so can your favourite internet platforms that were once centrist/Switzerland-like in that they didn’t bother to push any ideologies or agendas and just existed as a place you could interact with other people.
Moving onto my example:
One presidential candidate seemingly had ability to draw a crowd of 75,000 people IRL with 140 characters in a Tweet, as well as thousands watching online for nearly any appearance. The other candidate used the Coof to make excuses explaining why they could only garner 8 people at a “rally” and a few hundred viewers online. One candidate was able to stand up in front of a crowd for three hours and speak off-the-cuff, making jokes, citing facts, talking about policy and (admittedly) being clumsily transparent about plans moving forward. The other one stumbled on cue cards, currently gives up halfway through speaking to their supporters, refused to answer questions, exhibited very sad cognitive inability (even with an earpiece) and rarely made appearances. The candidate also had the MSM firmly on their side, globally, to protect them; biased/skewed articles and lack of coverage on their gaffs to odd promotion on social issues that are divisive and seemingly weren’t as prominent before it became a crutch for candidates to run on. This candidate was deemed the most popular of all time…it really doesn’t look like it…But if you only follow the television or the top video algothrythms on Youtube…You’d never know it was debatable or that something doesn’t line up…
Certain videos (*cough* anything from the White House official channel since the election) is tanking big time, Eg: 270 thumbs up and 2.8K, comments turned off within minutes etc. About 2K dislikes were disappeared from that channel three/four days ago, in line with Youtube’s reputation for curbing interactions to support favoured algorithms and agendas, and give the impression not as many people didn’t like what they were seeing. There are a lot of places that have screenshots of before and after, and some of us newshound-types, saw it with our own eyes. 😉
My concern is the shaping of a narrative, how Youtube, and other tech-oligarchs who control the digital version of the town square can steer whichever agenda they need/want by limiting the public’s opinion or ability to tell each other it’s okay not to like an idea being pushed. It’s got the potential to not only suppress the free speech of the majority but also shape the impression people take from a situation and doesn’t allow them to experience reality or give a chance to express their opinion. It also ensures that lobbyists and those with the means can dictate the direction of public opinion and elections etc etc etc many facets of the society that WE have to live in…while they sit in their mansions laughing at the plebs fighting among themselves and being lied to.Â
Odysee, Bitchute, Gab, Minds, Telegram and more are on the up n up, albeit with the MSM’s typical predictable canned response of calling them racist LOL…Which means repeating and regurgitating slanderous labels until Normies form an opinion that isn’t their own…because the alternative platforms are the competition (look what they did to Parler.) Never believe the tech oligarchs have your best interests at heart. All they want is your money and your mind, and once they have that, they sell you off to the highest bidder.
TLDR: *Could have gone further discussing the gagging of certain opinions on Youtube and Instagram.
*I like to see/hear both sides of debates and make my own decision.
*I don’t need a biased, paid-off platform trying to tell me what to think or trying to quash my ability to critically think.
*I’m genuinely concerned that people will make decisions on limited information.
* For the dummies; just because you comment on something, does not mean you are instantly supporting the opposite party. There is a lack of media embedded here for on one of the candidates I’ve mentioned, because all you have to do is go to the first page of Google and you’ll be flooded with negative press, so enjoy that at your leisure, I’ve been bombarded with enough nonsensical MSM tripe. 🙂
*Fuck these sickos who lured people into their data-mining platforms, made sure that people were addicted and then screwed us for expressing ourselves in ways that don’t help them!
