Making Karma

My father is now quite elderly. I drove him home last night, I was borrowing his car while mine is at the repairer’s getting fixed. When he got out of the car in the dark, (with some difficulty, again- elderly)…he went to the rear of the car instead and started pushing the panel over the back passenger’s side. I waited, I couldn’t drive off yet because he was in the way, standing in the red light and doing whatever it was. He then came back to my window and told me that I had to push the back panel every time I thought of it because it was no longer meeting the bottom half.

He told me that an older couple hit his car with theirs as they were approaching a set of traffic lights.  They bumped into his car from behind causing scratches, a small dent, and now the bumper is out of shape and not meeting the other parts of the car.

The male passenger was part of an older couple, the shorter woman driver stayed in the car. The man told my dad they would all go through the lights and pull over to exchange information in a section of road up ahead with some space…

Then they kept driving when he pulled over.

They literally fled the scene of a car accident. Albeit small, but still against the law to do. Of course, being alone and being elderly and not great with his vision, my father wasn’t able to get the license plate of the decrepit Bonnie and Clyde wannabes.

Apparently he recognized them from around the area, shopping locally and to be people who came off as greasy and sleazy. I offered my assistance if he sees them again; call me and either they are getting a smashed window or I will follow them home and call the police while I knock on their door and confront them. My friends were more in favour of the second option. The thug in me thinks the first one would feel better. Hey, when you grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, your mind still has the potential to seek different options. (Calm down. I’m mostly joking)

It got me thinking about the mentality and calibre of our society. The fact the couple left the scene of an accident is against the law. Morally, it was disgusting and I hope they reap what they sow, that it happens to them one day because, aside from having no insurance information of theirs to get damaged property fixed , it feels like bullying.

The unfairness that they would cause damage, then lie to an old man who was just going about his business, duping him into believing in the common decency of another person, then leaving him with damage and the feeling of injustice and embarrassment. In fact, the first thing he said to me before he explained it, was

“I was made a right fool of the other day…”

No, you weren’t.

They committed a pathetic act that could have been sorted out very easily. The man they did this to would probably have told them it was okay, and come to a fair agreement where they didn’t have to pay too much etc. Instead they screwed over a decent person who still believed in common decency.

So, do you turn the other cheek? Give grace, let God and Karma sort it out but you won’t know the result?

Or…do you smash their car up and do what the law couldn’t/didn’t?Put the fear of God into them when you confront them so they never do it again? Parent them at this old age? haha

Tempting, huh?
