Your Favourite Characters?

Is it possible to have favourite characters?

Yes and no (yeah, I know, real helpful.) I imagine the “Who is your favourite child?”question is similar… Your “favourite” isn’t really a favourite because you do actually like them all, but the frontrunner changes sometimes. There are times when I really enjoy a character’s arc. There are times when the story needs to be written a certain way to take the course it needs to…not necessarily because I reallllly want to. Eg: if I didn’t agree with a character’s course of action etc in a moral way, it still needs to be written to push the story to where it needs to go. (Maybe writing about this challenge will be a future post) I don’t love all the characters as people, but I do appreciate them all as characters because I like challenges.

Agent Starr is hot.

Someone I know read KOS and was gushing about Cleo Darkrose for months after they finished the book. They’d also bring her into conversations that were totally irrelevant, saying a secret motto I used to have in my early 20s: WWCD – WHAT WOULD CLEO DO? 😉 When we’d be sparring she would say “Cleo would love this!” etc. She would even come up to me and hit me saying “You gonna go Cleo on my ass now?” She would tell me Trent Starr is hot from time to time. It was hilarious and so great that someone was a fan of Cleo Darkrose and the books, but also that they had the imagination to think beyond the book…which is the biggest compliment ever! She liked the character so much, she was able to picture her in other environments. She told me that she was excited when Cleo kicked ass and the sexual tension between her and Starr.

I identify with Agent Trent Starr’s internal arguments, and the self-deprecating humour. There was a long time where he was my favourite character because he was tough and wise but somehow kind. The other element I enjoyed was that he was male. At MDS, it doesn’t make a difference, the same attitude and dedication is expected from all agents but certain industries make it harder to display emotions as a man. Exploring the character’s personality and having some of it restrained but writing in a way that showed his true feelings was fun to figure out how to display.

My favourite character is one you haven’t met yet, but you will. And you probably won’t like him.

So, why do I like him?

I can’t give spoilers because he’s first introduced in Red Cowboys and we’re closing in on a potential release. Yes, I should have promoted more. Anyway, the character:

He is exciting and unpredictable. He says whatever he thinks and he gives NO fucks what you think.

He isn’t who he seems

He’s done it tough. He’s had a rough life and that’s why he is the way he is.

His insults and attitude can be harsh…and it’s hilarious, (to me anyway.)

You don’t know how he will react to anything or whose side he’s on or why.

His comebacks and personality kind of reminds me of someone I know, (but he isn’t based on anyone)

He’s mysterious because no one knows his true motivations or how far he is willing to go for those.

He’s different from all the other characters and walks both worlds; MDS and Real World. oooOOOOoooo 😉

Apparently, that’s what it takes to do it for me. I think Trent Starr is a hottie (like everyone else does) but this other character is very interesting and I like how unpredictable he is. Even when I’m writing him, to stay in character, he comes out with outlandish stuff. He surprises me every single time he’s on a page because his moral compass changes with the wind, and he’s playing some kind of 8D chess that even I can’t figure out sometimes…The funny thing is I often find out that he had a plan all along and ties things together 50 pages down the track without even asking my help or permission. He is magical. I can’t wait for you guys to meet him.

TLDR:

*Having a favourite character is like being asked if you have a favourite child/cat/dog etc.

*Cleo rocks.

*Different elements draw us to certain characters

*I have characters who (cliched as it may be) write themselves and I can’t predict them sometimes.

*My favourite character is illustrated below!

Cowboy.” 1, Traditional animal herder who tends cattle on ranches usually in the North American region.

2, Derogatory term describing someone who is reckless, ignores potential risks, irresponsible or who heedlessly handles a sensitive or dangerous task.
